Woolly mammoth return possible... Look out Jurassic Park

Jurassic Park was a cool movie when it first came out.  The concept of dinosaurs roaming the earth once again was fun to imagine.  If researchers have their way, we may not be too far off from seeing pre-historic animals alive in our life time.

Paleontologists are piecing together the genome species of long gone creatures like the woolly mammoth and Neanderthals.  They're doing this to bring them back to life much like the plot of Jurassic Park.

Scientists say that it's not too difficult to piece together the original genetic instructions as DNA retrieval from ancient species has become easier.  Some scientists believe that it is theoretically possible to bring back an extinct species as long as an extremely well-preserved cell is found.

The theory goes a little something like this:  Get the genome of a mammoth.  Compare it with it's closest living relative, the Asian Elephant.  Then engineer the elephant DNA so that is matched to the mammoth.  Impregnate the elephant with the mammoth DNA. TA-DA! You've got your self a woolly mammoth baby.

There's probably a more complicated explanation, but that's the way I understood it.
